Music

At St Stephen’s school we have a thriving music department. All children in Key Stages 1 and 2 have a weekly lesson in our spacious and well-equipped music room. Children in the Early Years have a music session with a specialist teacher to extend their experiences.

In line with the national curriculum the emphasis is very much on singing, playing instruments and performance as the route to understanding the dimensions of music. All children in Y3 and Y4 learn the recorder in class and we have peripatetic staff who offer tuition on most orchestral instruments as well as the drum kit.

The school thrives on performance and we have a Christmas Nativity, candle lit Carol Service and a whole-school summer production as well as numerous opportunities for instrumental learners to play in concerts. We run an orchestra and choir and music plays a central part of our worship. We work closely with the Tri Borough Music Hub to ensure that children have access to the amazing opportunities on offer, such as access to concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and large-scale vocal projects.
