A Friday Night Round Up from Mr Schumm

With the sound of ‘Oliver’ ringing throughout the school, I put pen to paper to cast my eye back on an eventful few weeks – inspired by Mr Charles Dickens perhaps!

Year 1 Phonics Screen

Year 1 have completed their Phonics Screening. The children have tried their very best, worked extremely hard and totally smashed it! A massive thank you to the Year 1 team and our Phonics Lead Mrs Ghoul for all their hard work.

Secret Artist

Thank you to all those parents who joined us for the Secret Artist last night. It was a fabulous event in a stunning off site venue. The art work on display from children and adults, was amazing and after a leisurely browse, the bidding was soon at a frenzy! Thank you to all who purchased a piece of art and a particular shout out to all the organisers.

Father’s Day Breakfast

Thank you to all those Dads and Lads who joined us today for a truly scrumptious breakfast with lashings of smoked salmon! Thank you Jessie and the team for all their hard work and making the morning such a success.

Cinema Trip

Some of us enjoyed a very swanky trip, this week, to a rather posh cinema in White City with the top fundraisers from the sponsored run. An afternoon of Paddington in Peru and a few sweet treats was the order of the day!

Holland Park Opera

Both Y6 classes made their way through the drizzle to Holland Park this week for the matinée Opera performance of Itch. They enjoyed an interesting preview chat about the plot and music before settling down to what was for most, their first ever opera experience.

Junior Citizen

Y6 Ayres took part in the Junior Citizens programme this morning at Fulham Football Club. The lucky children got a preview of the brand new stand that opens at the weekend while learning lots from the: London Fire Brigade; Transport for London; the Metropolitan Police; LBHF Law Enforcement as well as FFC. They also met local MP Ben Coleman a keen supporter of JCs. Huge thanks to all who made it such an informative day as our children prepare for life outside our St Stephen’s bubble.

Year 2 at St Paul’s Cathedral

Year 2s went on an exciting journey to St. Paul’s Cathedral and revisited their learning about the Great Fire of London. They imagined they were walking through the busy streets of London over 350 years ago, bursting with tall, wooden houses and narrow lanes filled with people.

They had fun dressing up and role playing different characters from the story of the Great Fire of London.

They explored the beautiful St. Paul’s Cathedral’s designed by Sir Christopher Wren. They loved looking up at the large dome shining in the sky. Inside, they admired the colourful mosaics, tall columns, and whispering galleries where their voices travelled in funny ways. They faced their fears and climbed 257 steps to the Whispering Gallery, 376 steps up to the Stone Gallery and 528 steps in total to the Golden Gallery.

Year 2 at Bute House

Year 2 had the opportunity to attend an Art and DT workshop in Bute House with the fantastic Mr Vessey and Mrs Russell. They had a busy morning creating their own clay tiles with lots of fun squeezing, rolling, moulding, wetting, cutting, shaping and painting. It was a great workshop and the children all loved it, especially when Mr Vessey took out the snacks! Huge ‘thank you’ to Bute House for having us.

Year 3 and Year 5 meet an Author and a Poet!

‘Yeh! Yoh! Yeh! Yoh!’ – Year 3 were encouraged to rap by Welsh Poet Laureate Alex Wharton at the Lyric Theatre.  As part of the Barnes Literary Festival, they went along for an author talk.  They were entertained by his poems and even performed alongside him.  He engaged his audience with a ‘draw-along’ to four of his poems which included Mr Slime (about a slug in his kitchen) and Hector the Horrible Hedgehog.  Thanks to Mrs Pereira for organising.

Year 5 were lucky enough to meet Onjali Q Raúf, author of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. Onjali spoke to the children about her inspiration for writing the book, meeting and working with many refugees in Calais. Not only did she share inspiring stories but she also spoke to the children about how all of our actions can make a positive difference in this world.

Cross the Line

This morning, Year 6 had the opportunity to watch Cross the Line, a powerful theatre production delivered by the Lyric Hammersmith in partnership with the LBHF Gangs, Violence and Exploitation Unit (GVEU). Using the power of theatre and storytelling, the production helps young people develop empathy, understanding and awareness around gang culture and exploitation. It also introduces key warning signs related to grooming and unsafe situations. Cross the Line is a new educational intervention aimed at reducing future crime by equipping young people with the knowledge and tools to make informed choices and stay safe.

And finally…

Sports Day Information- Friday 20 June 2025

This time next week Y2-Y6 will be enjoying the biggest sporting event of the year – the St Stephen’s Sports Day at Perivale Athletics Track, Stockdove Way, UB6 8TJ.

Spectators are very welcome to come, but we also know that this won’t be possible for everyone. If you are unable to get your children to the venue at Perivale and back yourselves, please could you think about how they will get to and from the venue, and who you might be able to ask to give your child a lift.

It would be great if parents who are driving or making their own way there could use their class WHATSAPP groups to offer lifts or to take other children from the class. I

If your child needs to be taken by school staff, they will travel to Perivale Athletics Track on public transport and will need to be at school on the day by 8.15am.

Children and adults who are making their own way to the athletics track should arrive there between 9.30am and 9.45am. Please note, if children arrive early the adult who brought them will need to be responsible for them until 9.45am when they are put into year groups with staff.

As with previous sports days, children will need to wear their PE shorts/tracksuit bottoms and a top reflecting their house teams (red for Aylward, blue for Liddell, green for Wesley and yellow for Crummell.

Children should also bring a waterproof jacket and adequate sun protection to ensure they are prepared for all weather conditions.

In addition to this, all children will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink (no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please). There is usually a basic café at the Athletics Track for parents to purchase drinks and snacks throughout the day.

For those that are familiar with the format, it remains similar to previous years. For those who will be coming for the first time, please be assured that all children are prepared for the day in their PE lessons with Mr Blair, where he explains how each event works, and they all have the opportunity to practise in those lessons.

Every child will take part in each of the four main events competing for their houses in their year groups, on a rotational basis. The events are: sprint, throw, hurdles and long jump as well as fun races. In the afternoon they’ll be a short lunch break (approx. 30 minutes) followed by the much anticipated parent & sibling races. Finally, to finish the event they’ll be some long distance races and the results ceremony.

The athletics track is fully secure, with toilets and first aid facilities all on site, so there is no reason for any of the children to leave the track at any point during the day. As in previous years, we are very happy for pupils to sit with their parents at lunch time, although we do ask that you do not take your child or any other child out of the enclosure until the end of the day.

The event is scheduled to finish at approximately 2.30pm. At this point, we would ask that you take home the children that you brought with you to the track. Children who have requested to travel to the track on public transport with school staff will return to school unless a parent is there at the end of the event to take them home. Please do not take your child home without informing their class teacher. All other pupils returning to school will be dismissed at the usual time.

If you have any questions about Sports Day please do not hesitate to make these know to me or Mr Blair.

Have an amazing weekend and see you on Monday.
