A Friday Night Round Up from Mr Schumm
Good afternoon,
Bible Quote of the Week
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Deuteronomy 32:6
Well, it’s been a busy few weeks at St Stephen’s with parent talks, class assemblies, Lunar New Year and a spot of Coding thrown in amongst the many highlights!
Year 3 Class assemblies
The Year 3 classes have both delighted us with their thought provoking and entertaining assemblies. Nichols class focused on all manner of green/sustainable issues, whilst Lear class took us back to the Ancient Egyptians! We had some great performing, costumes and singing to enjoy as well as a host of interesting facts. Well done all.
RE Lessons in Year 6
Our Year 6 pupils gathered together in our church of St Stephen & St Thomas to speak with our parish Vicar Rev Denis; the Curate Rev Cheryl and Rev Jamie, the new-ish vicar at St Michael’s in the White City. As they are learning about the Liturgy of the Church of England, they bombarded the Reverends with questions that they had prepared in their last lesson, about different things to do with the church’s liturgy and their own interpretations of it. They also learnt about the thurible, how it is used in some churches and why.
Ben Cantelon
Thank you Ben for a truly inspirational worship session. The children loved it and it was a perfect way to start the day. Ben has agreed to join us on a regular basis for worship with the whole school – amazing!
Talks Galore
Thank you to all those parents who joined us for the Admissions and Neurodiversity talks. These talks are a great way for us to share knowledge and support each other within our community.
Another thank you to all those parents who joined us for our Year 1 Phonics meeting.
Lunar New Year
We have been dancing, crafting, learning about Asian countries, making and eating delicious foods for this year’s Lunar New Year. We started the day with a fantastic assembly led by Winky learning why the colour red and making a noise are so important at Lunar New Year. We followed this with the dragon dance – nothing like a spot of running around the hall dressed as a dragon to get me in the mood! Jessie, the kitchen team and parent volunteers provided us with a Lunar New Year feast for lunch. Hindy, our workshop leader, led us in workshops on traditional fan dancing and Tai chi. Each class has studied an Asian country looking at the geographical features of that country and how each country celebrates Lunar New Year. Thank you to all the parents who supported/ contributed to the day and of course a special thank you to the one and only Winky, for her time and commitment to our school.
LifeBus Mental Health Workshops
This week, Years 1-5 were visited by Sarah Greenwood, who delivers LifeBus sessions on behalf of CORAM Education. Each session had a different focus with the children learning about the brain, taking care of feelings, acceptance and protecting myself. All the sessions allowed the children to talk through how they can take care of themselves and their well-being in response to different events and scenarios.
Coding Day
On Wednesday 29th January, we had our annual Coding Day! The ‘day’ actually began earlier in the week with Year 4 parent Harry delivering a fantastic collective worship / presentation. In doing this, he inspired the children in terms of future career options by giving them a glimpse into his job in working with CGI and VR. Thank you Harry! In-class, we continued to explore all the different ways we use Computing (Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy) in and around school. Enjoying a range of ‘plugged’ and ‘unplugged’ activities, we used a range of online tutorials to practise our coding skills. Finally, we completed activities designed to build upon and refine our online safety skills. A great time was had by all!
Year 1 History Workshops
On Friday 24th January, Year 1 really enjoyed a workshop provided by CREW. In the workshop, the children got to explore toys from the past and even got to try some of them including an old hoop and stick! It really helped them to see how toys have changed in last 100 years.
